Mac OS X 10.0 MacOS X was Apple's replacement for their classic MacOS. MacOS X is based on NeXTSTEP, a Unix-based OS. The first consumer release also featured a. Big Sur compatibility. Big Sur is the latest version of macOS. It arrived on some Macs in November.

In 1984 Apple Computer unveiled their Macintosh. It included a new user interface that revolutionized the way people though about computer interaction. Originally referred to as simply 'Macintosh System', the underlying OS was a single-tasking disk system for the Motorola 68K CPU. Significant changes were made in MacOS 7.x.

Emulation note: For MacOS 0.x-6.x we recommend the vMac Mini emulator.

It is possible to write Macintosh 400k/800k images to a real disk using a Kryoflux.

Note: Wikipedia's/Apple's Developer CD Classic Mac OS 'System Software' numbering scheme is GARBAGE and should NOT be used.

System 4.2, Finder 6.0 (System Software 5.0) Starting with this release, Apple attempts to unify all pieces of the software product under one version numbering system. Version '5.0' is predominatly printed on the boxes and the disks. Yet for some reason Apple did not bump the System file version number - which is now shown in the About Finder dialog! Adds more color support, adds multitasking and application switching via MultiFinder.
